I’ve never been to Dubai. Let me say that up front, because everything I know about it comes from friends who go every winter and come back talking about gold-flecked desserts and valet queues full of cars I can’t name. But London does a decent version of that world if you know where to look, and you can do it in a day without selling anything.
Start In Knightsbridge
Harrods is the obvious one. Walk in, ignore the tourist crush by the entrance, and head straight for the food halls and the jewellery rooms. You can spend a whole afternoon there and buy nothing, which I’ve done, and felt oddly rich anyway. The escalators alone are an event.
Walk ten minutes and the streets around Sloane Street are full of the sort of shops where nobody asks if they can help you, they just look at you for a second. Fine. Go in anyway.
Edgware Road Is The Real Thing
Most guides skip this and it’s a mistake. Edgware Road is where London’s Arab community actually eats, and the food is brilliant. Grilled meats, proper hummus, sweets stacked in glass cabinets, shisha cafes open until stupid o’clock. Edgware Road isn’t glossy. Doesn’t try to be. I went on a Thursday after work thinking I’d grab something quick, and three hours later I was still sat outside, stuffed, a bit cooked from the patio heaters.
Go hungry. Don’t plan anything. Just walk till something smells right and sit down.
Mayfair For The Polished Bit
Mayfair is where the Gulf crowd tends to stay and spend, so a lot of the hotels, restaurants and bars have that same shiny, over the top feel. Gold detailing, huge floral displays, staff who know your name by the second visit. Afternoon tea is an easy way in, because you get the whole experience for about the price of a normal dinner.
For a late drink afterwards, Scotch London is one of the spots people mention when they want something dressed up with a bit of energy. Good looking room, upscale crowd, and you’ll want to have made some effort before you walk in. Look up the opening times and the dress code before you leave, they change more than you’d expect. I got that wrong once. Wrong shoes, Mount Street, no plan B, and I just stood there for a bit wondering where my evening had gone.
Small Touches That Make It Feel Like Dubai
Hire a driver for the night. Sounds daft, I know, but a proper car and somebody opening the door for you changes the whole feel of the evening. Pay for it once and you’ll get it.
Dessert next. Go somewhere that makes a show of it. Flames, sparklers, something shaved over the top at your table. A bit much. Also kind of great.
Dress up more than you think you need to. Nobody in these places is in trainers and a hoodie, and you’ll feel it if you are.
None of it replaces the actual city, obviously. But if you want a day that leans glossy and unapologetic, Knightsbridge, Edgware Road and Mayfair will get you most of the way there.
