Which Capitals In Europe Are Worth a Visit

Europe is a very interesting continent, that has contributed more to modern history than any other (save perhaps for North America, which was colonised by Europeans).  As you would expect from a continent that’s left such an indelible mark on the world, there are some very interesting cultures, peoples, and cities for you to see there.

If you are planning on visiting, then you need to do your research and find the cities that most interest you. This post will help you to do that, by telling you which ones are worth visiting (and why they are worth visiting).

Paris

Paris is one of Europe’s most iconic cities, known internationally for being a city of romance and culture. If you have never been, then it is worth visiting. A lot of first-timers to the city take tours because they are one of the most effective ways of seeing everything, without having to stumble around using a map. Search for the best Paris tours and find the one that suits you. Don’t just blindly pay for a tour, without first researching the provider. Also, make sure that when you are getting tours, it is with somebody who’s licensed.

Unfortunately, outside all of the city’s major tourist spots (i.e., the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre) it is common to find touts selling tours. It is better to book online in advance than to take a chance on a tour guide in person.

London

London is a stone’s throw from Paris. You can travel between the cities in as little as half a day. The best way to travel from Paris to London is by train. London is another of Europe’s most iconic cities,  known for its beautiful architecture, museums and galleries, and interesting history. The city itself has been inhabited since at least the Roman period when it was a Roman settlement, which can be seen by the fact that in the City of London, there is an intact Roman wall, running for over a mile. Like Paris, it is a good idea to take a tour of London if it’s your first time there.

Rome

On the subject of Romans, if they interest you, then why not visit their capital city, Rome? Rome is the capital of Italy and the former centre of the Roman Empire.  It is a city that is rich in history, culture, art, and food. One of the best things about Rome is the abundance of ancient sites available for travellers to visit that the city offers. If history does not interest you but art does, then you can visit the Vatican and check out Michelangelo’s famous frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Moscow

Moscow is Russia’s capital.  A lot of people forget that Russia is a part of Europe, mainly because of how distanced it is from other European nations politically. Even so, it is an incredibly interesting country, with an ancient history, and an amazing culture. St. Petersburg is also worth a visit. In the past, St. Petersburg was the nation’s capital. St. Petersburg is the city featured in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, where Raskolnikov wanders idly.  If you are visiting Russia, then see as many of the nation’s cities as you can, especially if you are travelling from far away.

Belgrade

Belgrade is Serbia’s capital. It is a city that has been inhabited for at least 7,000 years.  One of the main tourist attractions there is the Kalemegdan Fortress. There are many other castles and fortresses that can be seen in and around the city too, however. If you are visiting for the first time, then again, you may want to take a tour. There is really no way that you will be able to see all Belgrade has to offer on your own, without an expert’s support. It’s also worth noting that if you love to party, then Belgrade is one of the best places in Europe to go.

Madrid

Madrid is Spain’s capital. As you might expect from a nation as interesting as Spain, there is a lot to see in its capital city. From castles to cathedrals, Madrid has it all. When in the country, you may also want to visit some of its other cities, too, and even consider visiting the Alhambra, an ancient Muslim castle, from when Spain was ruled by Muslim conquerors. You can also get over to Morocco in less than a day from parts of Spain, so if you want to explore North Africa too, then you can do that with ease.

There are so many more cities in Europe that you need to visit than just those listed here. It is a rich, incredible continent, with an amazing history.  Again, if you plan on visiting, then consider a tour. A tour will allow you to see everything that’s worth seeing (and learn about what you are seeing).
